How Salmonella Spreads from Dog Poop

• Fecal-oral route — handling waste, then touching food or face.
• Environmental contamination — bacteria survive in soil and on surfaces.
• Dog-to-human contact — dogs lick their paws and hindquarters, then lick human hands or faces.
• Shared surfaces — dogs tracking waste residue onto floors, furniture.

The Raw Diet Connection

Dogs fed raw meat diets shed Salmonella at much higher rates than kibble-fed dogs. This creates a specific risk pattern:

• The raw meat itself may be contaminated.
• The dog's digestive system allows bacteria to pass through and multiply.
• Feces from raw-fed dogs are more likely to be infectious.
• Households with immunocompromised members should be especially cautious.

Symptoms in Humans

• Abdominal cramps.
• Vomiting.
• Symptoms typically appear 6-72 hours after exposure.
• Most cases resolve in 4-7 days, but severe cases require hospitalization.

Prevention

1. Remove dog waste from the yard promptly — daily is ideal.
2. Wash hands after handling dog waste, even with bags.
3. Clean and disinfect surfaces your dog contacts regularly.
4. Discourage face-licking, especially for young children.
5. If feeding raw, handle food and waste with extra hygiene precautions.
6. Keep immunocompromised family members away from waste cleanup duties.
