The Halloween Night Problem
On Halloween night, your front yard becomes a public walkway. Trick-or-treaters cut across lawns, walk on garden borders, and congregate on porch areas — often in costumes that restrict their vision and footing. A pile of dog waste in the path is guaranteed to be stepped in.
Beyond the unpleasantness, there is a real liability concern. A child who slips on waste and falls could be injured, and the homeowner may be responsible. A clean yard on Halloween is both good neighborliness and good sense.
Pre-Halloween Yard Prep
- Do a thorough yard cleanup on the morning of October 31st — the entire front yard, driveway margins, and walkways
- Walk the yard again 30 minutes before trick-or-treating begins at dusk
- Clear fallen leaves that may be hiding waste (rake, then scoop, then re-rake)
- Install temporary path lighting along the route from sidewalk to your door
- Keep your dog inside during trick-or-treating to prevent new deposits in the front yard
Tip
If your dog has a preferred spot in the front yard, designate an alternative potty area in the backyard for Halloween week. This eliminates the risk of fresh deposits where trick-or-treaters walk.
Lighting the Way
Adequate lighting isn't just for festive ambiance — it helps trick-or-treaters see and avoid any obstacles, including waste you may have missed. Solar pathway lights, luminaries, or even a well-placed porch light pointed at the yard can make a difference.
The Morning After
November 1st cleanup includes picking up dropped candy and wrappers in addition to normal waste. Your dog may have found and consumed candy overnight — check stool for wrapper fragments and chocolate evidence.
Warning
Walk your yard and the sidewalk border on November 1st morning. Discarded candy wrappers with chocolate residue are common, and your dog will find them on their morning walk if you don't find them first.
