Why Chocolate Is Dangerous for Dogs
Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, both of which dogs metabolize far more slowly than humans. The darker and more concentrated the chocolate, the more toxic it is per ounce. Baker's chocolate is roughly 10 times more toxic than milk chocolate.
| Chocolate Type | Theobromine (mg/oz) | Toxic Dose (20 lb dog) | Lethal Dose (20 lb dog) |
|---|---|---|---|
| White chocolate | 0.25 | Very large amount | Not typically lethal |
| Milk chocolate | 64 | 7 oz | 52 oz |
| Semi-sweet | 150 | 3 oz | 22 oz |
| Dark chocolate (70%) | 228 | 2 oz | 14 oz |
| Baker's chocolate | 450 | 1 oz | 7 oz |
| Cocoa powder | 800 | 0.5 oz | 4 oz |
Signs in Your Dog's Waste
- Dark brown or black diarrhea within 2-6 hours of ingestion
- Vomiting that may contain visible chocolate
- Increased frequency of bowel movements
- Wrapper fragments in stool indicating packaging was consumed
- Blood in stool in severe cases (indicates GI damage)
Warning
If you find chocolate-related evidence in your dog's waste but didn't see them eat it, still call your vet. Knowing the approximate amount and type consumed helps your vet determine the treatment plan.
Immediate Response Steps
- Assess what chocolate was consumed — check boxes, wrappers, and packaging for amount
- Call ASPCA Poison Control (888-426-4435) or your vet immediately
- Do NOT induce vomiting unless specifically directed by a veterinary professional
- Collect a sample of the chocolate wrapper or box to show the vet
- Monitor and note all symptoms including waste changes, timing, and behavior
Valentine's Day Prevention
- Keep all chocolate gifts in closed drawers or cabinets, not on tables or nightstands
- Remind children and partners that chocolate gifts must be stored out of dog reach
- Be especially careful with gift baskets delivered to the front door — dogs often reach them first
- Use baby gates to restrict dog access to rooms with Valentine's gifts
- Check under furniture and behind couch cushions for dropped candy after celebrating
Tip
Get your dog their own Valentine's treat — carob-based dog treats look and taste like chocolate to dogs but contain no theobromine. This gives them something special while keeping the real chocolate away.
Post-Incident Yard Cleanup
After a chocolate ingestion event, your dog's waste will be abnormal for 2-5 days. Increase cleanup frequency, note any changes for your vet follow-up, and apply enzymatic treatment to areas where diarrhea has soaked into the lawn.
