Puppies and Established Dogs Have Different Needs
When a puppy joins a household with an adult dog, waste management gets complicated. Puppies eliminate 5-6 times per day compared to an adult's 2-3 times, and puppy waste is often looser and more unpredictable.
The Puppy Challenge
- Frequency: Puppies go 5-6 times daily versus 2-3 for adults
- Unpredictability: Puppies lack bowel control and may go anywhere
- Dietary transitions: Puppy food produces different waste than adult food
- Parasite risk: Puppies are more likely to carry parasites that can spread to your adult dog
- Coprophagia risk: Puppies often eat stool (their own or the adult dog's)
Warning
Puppy coprophagia (stool eating) can spread parasites between dogs. Remove waste immediately to prevent this behavior from developing.
Training Strategy
Use your adult dog as a model. Take the puppy to the same spot the adult uses. Puppies naturally imitate older dogs and will adopt the established elimination patterns faster when they have a role model.
