The Allergy-Gut Connection
When most people think of dog allergies, they think of itching, sneezing, and watery eyes. But the immune system inflammation triggered by seasonal allergens (pollen, mold, dust) can also affect the GI tract.
The gut contains more immune cells than any other organ. When the immune system is activated by allergens, GI side effects are common:
- Increased intestinal permeability ("leaky gut").
- Elevated histamine affecting gut motility.
- Increased mucus production in the colon.
- Changes in gut microbiome during allergy season.
Common Poop Changes During Allergy Season
- Softer stool — not diarrhea, but consistently less firm.
- Increased frequency — one or two extra bowel movements per day.
- Mucus on stool — from colon irritation.
- Gas and bloating.
- Occasional vomiting (from post-nasal drip and mucus ingestion).
Info
If your dog's poop gets softer every spring and returns to normal in summer, seasonal allergies may be the cause — even if skin symptoms are minimal.
Breeds Most Affected
- French Bulldogs — already prone to GI issues; allergies compound them.
- German Shepherds — high rate of both allergies and GI sensitivity.
- Golden Retrievers — commonly affected by environmental allergies.
- Labrador Retrievers — allergy-prone with food sensitivities.
- Bulldogs — chronic allergies affecting skin and gut.
- West Highland White Terriers — genetically predisposed to atopic dermatitis.
Management
- Antihistamines (ask your vet for appropriate type and dosing).
- Probiotics — support gut health during allergy-driven inflammation.
- Limited-ingredient diet during peak season to reduce GI burden.
- Omega-3 fatty acids — anti-inflammatory support.
- Wipe paws after outdoor time to reduce allergen ingestion during grooming.
- Apoquel or Cytopoint — prescription allergy medications that reduce immune overreaction.
When to See a Vet
- Poop changes are severe (watery diarrhea, blood).
- GI symptoms persist outside of allergy season.
- Weight loss despite adequate food intake.
- Skin and GI symptoms together — may benefit from comprehensive allergy management.
